A person died in a house fire early Friday morning, a Dallas Fire Department spokesperson said in an email.

The fire was originally reported by Dallas police officers who smelled smoke as they were getting off work. The officers investigated further after making the call and located the house where the smoke was coming from. Dallas Fire-Rescue units responded at 3:19 a.m. to the 3100 block of Bryan Street near downtown Dallas.

Firefighters found smoke coming from a single-story residence. Later reports said fire was coming through the roof. Dallas Fire-Rescue said the blaze was mostly in the home’s attic.

Several neighbors were evacuated from their homes as a result of the fire, the Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson said.

An elderly man was inside the home when the fire started but firefighters could not pull him out. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire is undetermined pending a final ruling from the Dallas County medical examiner on the man’s cause of death, the fire spokesperson said.
