Suspect arrested after residents evacuated for police standoff in Pantego neighborhood
Residents near Grant Place in Pantego were evacuated while officers from multiple departments were in a standoff for more than 16 hours with an armed woman, police said.
The standoff began Thursday afternoon and continued into the early hours of Friday morning. The suspect was taken into custody about 8:45 a.m.
The incident started about 4 p.m. Thursday, when Tarrant County sheriff’s deputies and Pantego police officers arrived at a house on Grant Place to serve a mental health warrant, according to news releases from the Pantego Police Department and the sheriff’s office.
As officers tried to make contact with a person inside the home, that suspect “displayed a firearm,” the release said. A short time later, a deputy fired their service weapon, but it is not believed that anyone was shot. The suspect then retreated back inside the home and the officers and deputies pulled back, police said.
“Police have reason to believe this person is a danger to themselves and others,” Pantego police said.
Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV reported that, according to neighbors, the person is a woman in her 70s. The woman’s name has not been released. She was transported to the Tarrant County Jail.
There were no injuries to any officers or residents in the area, the sheriff’s office said.
During the standoff, the public was advised to stay away from a designated area shown in a map provided by police. The Arlington Police Department assisted with evacuating residents or having them shelter in place.
Fire and EMS crews were on standby. Arlington police had a SWAT team on scene and said they had established communications with the barricaded person Thursday night and were “attempting to resolve the situation as peacefully and quickly as possible.” A SWAT team from Grand Prairie arrived to relieve the team from Arlington early Friday morning.
The following roads were closed Thursday during the incident, police said shortly before 8 p.m.:
- Nora at Peachtree
- Nora at Smith Barry
- Smith Barry at Silver Leaf
- Silver Leaf at Peachtree
Residents were expected to be allowed back in their homes as soon as the situation was resolved, police said.
Other agencies who assisted include the Dalworthington Gardens Department of Public Safety, Pantego Fire Department, Arlington Fire Department and American Medical Response.
