Carbon monoxide prompts evacuation of state prison in Wise County; inmates to move

Sarah A. Miller for ProPublica

The state prison building in Bridgeport was evacuated on Wednesday when carbon monoxide was detected there.

No injuries have been reported at the prison near Highway 380 in Wise County, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The facility’s inmates are men, and it has a capacity of 520.

The TDCJ will drive the prison’s inmates to nearby facilities until repairs are made.

Firefighters, TDCJ technicians and a gas company’s employees went to the prison to investigate the source of the carbon monoxide, WFAA-TV reported.
