The son of a former city manager faces a capital murder charge after his parents were found dead Sunday afternoon, Dec. 28, inside their McKinney home, police said.

McKinney police officers responded to a call for a welfare check about 10 a.m. at the home in the 5300 block of Dunster Drive after family members reported not hearing from the residents for several days, police said in a news release.

Officers entered the home through the back door and found two homicide victims, 73-year-old Leonard Ragan and 72-year-old Jackie Ragan, with stab wounds in the living room, police said.

Police said officers then entered a bedroom where they found the couple’s son 34-year-old Bryce Ragan with a gun, which he refused to put down. Two officers fired their weapons, shooting him multiple times. He also faces three charges of aggravated assault against police officers, public information officer Darryl Saffold told the Dallas Morning News.

Bryce Ragan was taken to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition, according to police.

Leonard “Frank” Ragan served as McKinney’s city manager from 2008 to 2010.

No officers were injured during the shooting, police said.

“You would never think something like this can happen,” former McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV.

Loughmiller, who described Ragan as someone who “worked quietly behind the scenes” during his time with the city, said the news was difficult to process.

“I just would not have ever expected to hear something like this,” Loughmiller said.
