South Oak Cliff football player arrested in accidental shooting of teammate
A South Oak Cliff football player was arrested Saturday in an apparent accidental shooting of a teammate hours after the Golden Bears won the UIL 5A Division 2 state championship.
According to the affidavit obtained by Star-Telegram media partner WFAA, the suspect, 18, admitted to shooting his teammate on Saturday night at a house in the 6400 block of Knoll Ridge Drive in southwest Dallas. He is being held in the Dallas County Jail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Bond is set at $50,000.
The victim was transported to the hospital, but his condition was not known Monday.
A witness told officers the suspect was waving a rifle in the upstairs bathroom of a two-story home, the affidavit said. The victim called the suspect’s name and as the suspect turned to him, the rifle fired a single shot into the bedroom where the victim stood and hit him in the neck.
The suspect had told a witness that the gun’s safety was on before the shot was fired. As the witness left the bedroom, he heard the shot fired.
According to the affidavit, the suspect intended to drive the victim to the hospital, but police were called instead as the victim was bleeding heavily.
South Oak Cliff defeated Richmond Randle 35-19 at AT&T Stadium.
