Dallas police officers shot to death a civilian who opened fire early Monday on people on a street of bars in the city’s downtown, according to the police department.

The officers confronted the shooter after he or she fired upon multiple people about 2 a.m. in the 2000 block of Commerce Street, Dallas police said.

The assailant, whose name and age authorities have not released, died at the scene.

One victim died at the scene. Others were taken in a stable condition to a hospital. Police did not release the number of surviving victims. No officers were injured.

The police department did not immediately release other information on the shooting.
