Police on Thursday announced the arrest of the suspect in a 2021 killing in which they allege a drug buyer shot his seller dead in the kitchen of a southwest Arlington apartment.

Jason Reyes, 39, was charged on Wednesday with capital murder in connection with the death of Alphonso Lewis, 34.

After shooting him in the head during a robbery, Reyes took Lewis’ cellphone, according to Arlington police. Cellphone records show that Reyes’ phone pinged near the crime scene just before the shooting. Afterward, Reyes’ and Lewis’ phones began pinging in the same locations across Arlington, police said.

Reyes shot Lewis on Dec. 10, 2021, at the apartment in the 6300 block of Rivertrail Circle where Lewis lived, according to police.

The men knew each other, and Lewis sold drugs to Reyes in the past, police said.

Detectives viewed surveillance images that showed a masked person wearing gloves leaving the apartment complex a short time after the shooting. The police department in 2022 released to the public a still image of a person of interest and later received a tip reporting that the person looked similar to Reyes.

On Oct. 30, members of the U.S. Marshals Service North Texas Fugitive Task Force found Reyes in Fort Worth and took him into custody on an arrest warrant.
