Triple homicide suspect crashes into North Texas Buc-ee’s; customer injured
A 29-year-old triple homicide suspect remained in critical condition at a Dallas hospital Saturday after crashing into a North Texas Buc-ee’s and shooting himself early Friday, officials said.
Deputies were called to a home in Mabank in East Texas about 2:30 a.m. Friday, the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. They found five adults with gunshot wounds.
Three of the victims died from their injuries, according to the release. They’ve been identified as 51-year-old Kimberly Simpson, 72-year-old Connie Patrick and 57-year-old Rodney Hammonds. In addition to being shot, Hammonds was stabbed several times, officials said.
Two men, ages 24 and 70, survived the shooting and were taken to a hospital in Tyler, the release states. The 70-year-old victim is in critical condition.
Authorities identified Christopher Kyle Reid Jr. as the shooting suspect. He was thought to be driving a 2003 maroon Dodge Caravan or a 2019 gray Subaru.
About 5 a.m. Friday, police responded to the Buc-ee’s along Interstate 45 in Ennis, about 35 miles west of Mabank. The driver of a maroon Dodge Caravan crashed into the southwest entrance and pinned a woman against a sales display, Ennis police said on Facebook.
The driver, identified as Reid, shot himself in the head when the vehicle came to a stop, police said. Reid was taken to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas in critical condition.
The woman hit by the Dodge Caravan was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. She is from Oklahoma and was traveling through the area. Family members told KXAS-TV that she had to undergo surgery after the crash but was recovering.
Buc-ee’s remained open Friday despite the damage, according to KXAS reporting. Photos showed workers covering the damaged area with sheets of plywood.
The investigation into the triple homicide and the crash is ongoing, officials said. The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t given a motive for the shooting.
