A 40-year-old woman was found dead in a Lewisville motel room Thursday morning after a man who’d shot at officers barricaded himself inside during an hourslong SWAT standoff, police said.

Officers responded to Budget Suites of America, 2175 S. Texas 121, shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday. A 911 caller reported there was a suicidal man at the motel who was also threatening to kill the people around him, Lewisville police said in a news release.

Police learned the man had already fired shots and had possibly shot a woman who was inside the room with him, according to the release. The suspect was outside when officers arrived and he fired at them with a handgun, police said. No officers were hit, and the man went back inside before they had a chance to return fire.

The officers called for an armored vehicle to assist them at the scene. When it arrived, the suspect came back outside and fired at officers again, striking the vehicle, police said. This time the officers returned fire. Police said they don’t know if the man was hit. He went back inside, and remained there until SWAT officers convinced him to leave the room shortly after 8 a.m.

The suspect was wounded, according to police. It’s not clear if he shot himself or was hit by one of the officers’ bullets. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A woman was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside the room. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Endia Denise Middleton and said her death was a homicide. It’s not clear what her relationship was with the suspect, police said. Her death is under investigation.

“It is too early in the investigation for us to be able to say anything accurately of what happened,” Assistant Police Chief Donald Fulbright told reporters at a news conference Thursday.

Buildings in the area were evacuated during the standoff, and Fulbright said residents would be allowed back inside once the scene was clear.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on critical incident leave per department policy, Fulbright said. It will give them an opportunity to take care of their mental health and get any resources they might need, he said.

The Texas Rangers will lead a criminal investigation into the shooting, according to standard procedure in use of deadly force incidents, police said. The LPD Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative investigation to make sure the involved officers complied with department policies.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

“I’m just thankful that ... no other injuries occurred from this situation that was, you know, very chaotic and had the potential to be much, much worse,” Fulbright said.

Charges against the suspect are still being determined, police said.
