An 18-year-old Fort Worth high school student was arrested Wednesday after being accused of sending a hoax message to police about a weapon on campus, officials said.

Multiple police officers responded to Northwest High School in far north Fort Worth around 3 p.m. after receiving a text message stating an unknown person was right outside the building with a gun, according to 911 records.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown, according to a letter Northwest Independent School District officials sent to parents.

Police said the text message proved to be false. Officers identified the sender and took her into custody. The teen faces a terroristic threat charge, according to jail records.

District officials thanked the Fort Worth Police Department and Northwest ISD safety team for their quick response.

“Please know that any student who reports a false threat will be held accountable in accordance with the Northwest ISD Student Handbook and Code of Conduct,” district officials said in the letter.
