A 37-year-old North Texas youth baseball coach has been arrested on allegations of sexually assaulting a Prosper child.

Michael Angel Garcia was taken into custody in Hill County on Monday, Prosper Police Department officials said in a news release Wednesday. He’s being held in the Collin County Jail and faces a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, according to court records. His bond has been set at $1.5 million.

“Crimes against children are taken extremely seriously in the Town of Prosper, and the department will work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute such offenders to the fullest extent of the law,” police Chief Doug Kowalski said in the release.

Detectives used Prosper’s license plate reader camera system to keep track of the suspect’s whereabouts until they could obtain a warrant for his arrest, according to the release. Garcia tried to leave the area, and investigators contacted the Hill County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies there conducted a traffic stop on Garcia and took him into custody when the warrant was issued.

Additional charges against Garcia are possible, police said in the release. The 37-year-old suspect also faces charges in Frisco in connection with a family violence incident.

Garcia served as a coach with the Prosper Baseball Softball Association. PBSA leadership fired him from that role when they learned of the arrest and notified families whose children had been coached by Garcia.

Anyone who has information about additional victims or related incidents involving Garcia is asked to contact the Prosper Police Department at 972-569-1000.
