A North Texas police officer is recovering after being shot on Friday night outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Johnson County, officials said.

Officers from the Alvarado Police Department responded to the Prairieland Detention Center in the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane shortly before 11 p.m. They saw someone who appeared to be carrying a gun, according to a Facebook post by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The first responding officer tried to engage the suspect, and was immediately fired upon by multiple people.

The suspects tried to run away after the shooting, but several of them were arrested. Their motive for the shooting is unclear, according to the post.

The injured officer was treated for a neck wound and released after being airlifted to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.

Someone with federal law enforcement told KTVT-TV on Saturday that eight suspects were arrested in connection with the incident, including some individuals dressed in body armor. Early reports show that more than a dozen people, wearing masks and black clothing, vandalized security cameras and cars parked outside the detention facility.

The group set off fireworks, apparently trying to lure officers to the scene, the source revealed to KTVT.

Multiple people were arrested in June after rioting outside an ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, Department of Homeland Security officials said. No officers were seriously injured in the incident.

United States Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Saturday morning on X that the Justice Department is “closely monitoring the attacks” on ICE detention facilities.

“The Department has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible,” Blanche posted.

An Arlington newlywed, Ward Sakeik, was released from the Prairieland Detention Center on July 1 after more than 120 days in ICE custody. The 22-year-old was detained at a Miami airport in February while returning from her honeymoon.

Anyone with information about the shooting that injured the Alvarado officer is asked to contact the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 817-790-0910.
