Two Texas Tech University police officers were injured and the suspect is dead after a shooting early Tuesday morning in a parking lot of the Lubbock campus, officials said.

According to a statement released by university police, officers responded to a suspicious vehicle near Jones AT&T Stadium about 12:45 a.m.

Officers had pulled another vehicle over for a traffic violation and were dealing with the traffic stop when they noticed the suspicious vehicle with the door open and the suspect inside, Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath said at a press conference later Tuesday.

The officers went over to the vehicle to investigate, and what happened afterward is still under investigation, Bonath said.

The suspected shooter was killed when officers returned fire, the Texas Municipal Police Association said in a post on X. Two officers were shot and wounded. One officer has been released from the hospital and the other is still being treated, Bonath said.

The TMPA described the shooting as an ambush.

Officials haven’t released the names of the officers or the suspect, but said that the suspect has no affiliation with Texas Tech and likely is not from the area.
