Suspect arrested in April shooting death of Grand Prairie man, police say
Grand Prairie police have arrested a man who allegedly shot and killed an 18-year-old at a gas station on April 27, officials said in a statement.
The suspect, Keionn Winters, 18, was arrested May 27 with assistance from the U.S. Marshal’s Service, according to the statement. Winters has been charged with capital murder; his bond has been set at $1 million.
The victim, 18-year-old Jose Luis Flores, was pumping gas at a Circle K when Winters attempted to rob him prior to shooting him several times, Flores’ family said in an online petition. The petition, which has collected over 100 signatures, is urging the justice system to impose the death penalty on Winters.
“Allowing him to evade the death penalty would send a dangerous message that the lives of victims like Jose Luis are not valued,” Flores’ sister wrote in the petition.
In a statement at the time of the shooting, police said Flores may have been involved in “high-risk activity” shortly before his death, but did not specify what the activity was.
