A driver faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter after their passenger died in a crash on westbound Interstate 30 near MacArthur Boulevard in Grand Prairie on Sunday morning, March 23, police said.

About 5 a.m. a person in a Dodge truck pulling a utility trailer stopped on the shoulder of I-30 to adjust the towing straps. A Nissan car hit the utility trailer from behind, police said.

The passenger in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene and the car’s driver, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to a hospital, police said.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 22-year-old Eva Maria Chaverria.

Traffic investigators believe the driver of the Nissan was drunk and said the driver will face an intoxication manslaughter charge once released from medical treatment. No other charges are expected, police said.

Police have not released the name of the Nissan’s driver.

The driver of the Dodge truck was not injured.
