Texas law enforcement agencies are investigating a shooting in Red Oak during which Dallas police shot a suspect following a pursuit and fatal crash along Interstate 35E on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Dallas police said that they were chasing a capital murder suspect who crashed into a vehicle along southbound I-35E in Ellis County about 10:25 a.m. Thursday.

The suspect got out of his disabled vehicle after the crash with a gun in his hand and moved away from the pursuing officers, authorities said.

Officers fired their weapons, shooting the murder suspect, investigators said. Police provided life-saving medical care to the suspect, and he was taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to a news release. His is condition unknown, and his name has not been released.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Texas Rangers Division is investigating the shooting.

Authorities said the occupants of the other car that the suspect hit were taken to hospitals. One person in the other vehicle was killed, and another was severely injured. Their names have not been released.

The I-35E southbound lanes at Red Oak Road were shut down due to the crash. Drivers were asked to seek alternate routes and expect traffic delays, Red Oak police said in a Facebook post.

The Red Oak Police Department will investigate the traffic accident.

The Dallas Office of Community Police Oversight was also notified about the shooting and responded to the scene, police said.
