Inmate dies in North Texas jail after guards find him unresponsive New Year’s Day
A 47-year-old man died Jan. 1 after he was found unresponsive in his bed at the North Richland Hills city jail, officials said.
Michael Gene Knight was taken to Medical City North Hills where he was pronounced dead shortly before 10 a.m., according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s website.
Knight was arrested Dec. 31 in Watauga on a driving while intoxicated charge, the North Richland Hills Police Department said in a news release. He was booked into the city jail, which also serves Watauga, around 3:45 p.m.
The medical examiner will determine a cause and manner of death. He was given CPR at the jail before being transported to the hospital, according to the release.
“The North Richland Hills Police Department is committed to transparency and will provide additional updates as appropriate,” the release states.
Knight’s death is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division and Professional Standards Division per North Richland Hills Police Department standard procedure.
