A drunken man driving a semi truck crashed early Thursday into cars stopped because of construction on West Loop 820 in Fort Worth, killing a woman driving one of them, police said.

A 41-year-old man who was in the front passenger seat of the car in which the driver was pronounced dead suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, Fort Worth police said.

The semi and cars crashed about 1:30 a.m. near White Settlement Road.

Police booked the semi’s driver, Guadalupe Velazquez Cruz, 24, on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Velazquez Cruz told an officer that he was driving when he heard sirens, the car in front of him stopped suddenly and he struck it, police said. The suspect also said that he drank alcohol on Thursday, according to an incident report.

An officer wrote in the incident report that Velazquez Cruz had “swayed unsteady balance” and watery, bloodshot eyes. The officer smelled alcohol on the suspect’s breath, according to the report. Velazquez Cruz was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital., where he consented to have his blood tested, the officer wrote. Results of the test are pending.

The woman who died will be identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
