A man accused of killing his estranged wife’s boyfriend in Wise County was arrested after the shooting, which briefly led to a Texas Amber Alert on Sunday, authorities said.

The suspect, 33-year-old Jose Diaz-Martinez, was arrested when Texas Highway Patrol troopers stopped his pickup truck on U.S. 287 in the Panhandle near Clarendon on Sunday morning, Sheriff Lane Akin told the Wise County Messenger.

The victim, identified by the Sheriff’s Office as 33-year-old Elias Torres, died at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Deputies responded to the shooting about 4 a.m. Sunday at a home on Private Road 3459, west of the town of Paradise, Akin told the Messenger.

Two young children — a 2-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl — were initially reported missing and possibly abducted from the home where the shooting occurred, prompting authorities to issue an Amber Alert. The children were later found safe at Diaz-Martinez’s house, where the suspect left them alone before he fled in his truck, the sheriff said.

The suspect is expected to face a murder charge and two counts of abandoning a child, Akin told the Messenger.
