Guns, cash stolen from vehicles in back-to-back burglaries at Benbrook apartments: police
Thieves hit vehicles at a Benbrook apartment complex two nights in a row and took firearms and cash, police said.
Officers responded to the Aura Benbrook apartments at 301 Mercedes St. around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Benbrook police spokesperson Michael Mullinax. Around a dozen cars had been broken into. The owners had left some of them unlocked, but others were locked and the suspects broke windows to gain access.
Police were patrolling the area around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when they got a report of another robbery in progress at the Aura.
Officers arrived within two minutes, but the suspect vehicle fled the scene, Mullinax said. Police later learned the vehicle was stolen from another location. No suspects have been arrested.
Around seven vehicles were broken into during the second burglary, according to Mullinax. One man had repaired the glass broken out of his vehicle Tuesday only to have it broken again Wednesday.
Patrick Holt told KDFW-TV that a Benbrook police officer woke him up at 3 a.m. Wednesday to let him know his truck had been broken into again.
“I was like, there is no way they hit me twice,” Holt said to KDFW. “Back-to-back nights. They knew nothing was in the truck. Why come back?”
According to Mullinax, it’s unusual for thieves to hit the same place twice in a row. Two firearms and a small amount of cash were reported stolen in the burglaries.
Aura Benbrook told its residents in an email that police would provide extra patrols to monitor the area, KDFW reported. The apartment complex also plans to hire private security.
