One person was killed and another was injured in a random shooting near a Frisco Walmart on Wednesday night, police said in a news release.

Officers responded to the area of the Walmart near Preston Road and Hickory Street around 9:30 p.m Wednesday.

Callers reported hearing gunshots and told dispatchers that at least one person was believed to have been shot.

Upon arrival, officers located a victim with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot. A second victim was found nearby on Hickory Street, who also had multiple gunshot wounds, according to the release.

Officers secured the scene as victims received medical aid and searched the area for possible suspects.

The Frisco Fire Department transported both victims to local hospitals for treatment. One of the victims was later pronounced dead. The other victim is in stable condition.

No arrests have been made, and the homicide investigation is ongoing. The identities of the victims are not being released at this time.

Initial information suggested the shooting was an isolated incident, but further investigation determined the victims apparently were shot at random, according to police.

“While these types of crimes are fortunately rare in our city, the criminal element is always working to take advantage of any opportunity to victimize members of our community,” police said in the release.

Frisco police ask residents and visitors to keep the following in mind when out in public:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and exercise greater vigilance in areas where you are most comfortable.
  • Reduce or eliminate opportunities that may make you appealing to a criminal, such as walking alone, looking down at your phone, wearing headphones.
  • Trust your instincts.
  • Report any suspicious activity by calling the Frisco Police Department non-emergency line at (972) 292-6010 or dialing 911.
