A 2-year-old girl was shot to death on Sunday night in Dallas by an assailant firing from a vehicle, police said.

The child and a woman were shot about 9:30 p.m. in the 4700 block of Hay Street, near Fair Park, Dallas police said.

The victim’s relatives identified the child as Zyah “Tinky” Lacy, who was attending a family gathering when she was shot.

“She was only 2 years old and a very smart and beautiful little girl,” a cousin wrote on a GoFundMe page.

The child died at a hospital. The woman’s condition was last listed as stable. Family members said the woman is not related to the child.

Police did not announce an arrest in the drive-by shooting.

The killing occurred at the gathering when the assailant arrived and shot the victims, witnesses told WFAA-TV.

Zyah’s maternal step-grandmother, Deborah Harper-Smith, told WFAA that the event was a balloon release for another relative who also was killed in a drive-by shooting. Family members were taking photos when they heard gunshots and everyone began to run, she said. Harper-Smith said, “I grabbed my grandbaby” and then felt blood and realized the girl had been shot.

A police spokesperson told WFAA that the shooting was not random but that investigators do not think the child and injured woman were the intended targets.
