A good Samaritan who stopped in Dallas County around 2:30 a.m. Saturday to help someone involved in a highway accident was killed when an accused drunk driver hit the wrecked vehicle, according to authorities.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Monday that Donald Collins, 25, stopped to help the occupants of the wrecked vehicle after a red tow truck crashed into it and fled the scene. While he was standing next to the wrecked vehicle on Interstate 30 near the exit to 2nd Avenue, a Chevrolet Tahoe hit the wrecked vehicle and Collins.

The crash sent Collins and the passenger of the vehicle wrecked in the initial crash to the hospital, according to the news release. Collins died at the hospital and the passenger was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators arrested Irma Nelly Martinez-Leal, 33, and charged her with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying and finding the tow truck involved in the initial crash, as well as its driver. Anybody with information is asked to call detectives at 214-589-2343 or via email at VCU@dallascounty.org.
