One man is dead after he opened fire at police in Weatherford on Christmas Eve, prompting officers to return fire, striking and killing him, according to Weatherford police.

Officers responded to a call about a possible stolen vehicle from Georgia around 8 a.m., according to a news release from police. When they arrived in the area of York Avenue, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee police and officers pursued. The chase, which involved Weatherford police and Texas State Troopers, came to an end when the vehicle was involved in an accident at Highway 180 and Ric Williamson Memorial Highway.

Police said the driver of the vehicle got out when the car came to a stop and opened fire at officers. Weatherford police returned fire, hitting the man. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured, according to police. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting by officers and police are asking people to avoid the area as a heavy police presence and traffic delays are expected.
