Suspect in UT Arlington student’s death stalked woman victim went out with, police say

Police on Saturday arrested a suspect in the killing of a UT Arlington nursing student whom the assailant allegedly shot to death in Dallas six days earlier.

Jorge Esparza, 22, had stalked a woman with whom Ricardo Medina-Madriz, 27, had gone on a date, Dallas police said. The woman told police during the killing investigation of the stalking, and police arrested Esparza on suspicion of that crime.

Police said Esparza admitted in an interview with a detective that he shot Medina-Madriz. Police booked Esparza at Lew Sterrett Jail on suspicion of murder.

Esparza shot Medina-Madriz about 11:45 p.m. on Aug. 9 in the 3400 block of Jeffries Street in Dallas, police alleged.

Medina-Madriz was a current student in the UT Arlington master of nursing program, a university spokesman said. His enrollment at UTA began in spring 2019.
