Man who shot wife in Dallas suburb died from self-inflicted gunshot, police say
Irving police have identified a man who died Saturday following an exchange of gunfire with officers. The suspect, who had been accused of shooting his wife, shot himself in the head after officers found him in a yard, police said in a news release Monday.
In a separate incident, Irving police arrested another man who injured an officer with a stolen car on Sunday, police said Monday.
After a preliminary investigation of Saturday’s shooting, police said in a release that 59-year-old Rogelio Castro died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His wife was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
The woman was shot about 10 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Elwood Road, Irving police said. Castro left the scene before police arrived.
Officers canvassed the area and found him in the backyard of a neighboring property. When officers entered the backyard, they announced themselves, and Castro and officers both fired their weapons, police said. No officers were injured. Castro was pronounced dead at the scene.
In Sunday’s incident, Irving police arrested 41-year-old Johnny Drumgole on charges of aggravated assault against a public servant and auto theft, according to a press release. He was being held in the Irving City Jail on Monday on $550,000 bond.
On Sunday, officers responded to a call about a stolen vehicle at 1:10 p.m. at 3200 W. Irving Blvd. An officer saw Drumgole walking up to the stolen car and tried to detain him, but the suspect resisted, police said.
Drumgole got into the stolen car, put it in drive and wedged the officer between two vehicles — attempting to seriously injure or kill the officer to get away, the release says. The officer then shot at the suspect but did not hit him. Drumgole then stopped resisting and was arrested, police said. Both officer and suspect were taken to a hospital.
The officer suffered injury to his legs and is at home recovering. Drumgole had minor scrapes, police said.
