‘What are you going to do, shoot me?’ Fort Worth man says before he’s killed in dispute

Walter Freeman got upset on May 19 after he discovered his girlfriend suffered a bruise on her left arm after playing rough with a family member, according to a warrant.

Freeman set out to do something about it, family members told Fort Worth police.

On the afternoon of May 19, Freeman and friends drove to the home of his girlfriend’s aunt and her husband in the 4700 block of Willow Springs Drive, to confront Korey Ervin over the bruise, according to an arrest warrant.

Anthony Paige handed Freeman a handgun as Ervin walked out of his home, according to the warrant. Ervin said, “What are you going to do, shoot me?”

Seconds later, Freeman shot Ervin in the neck, killing him, according to the warrant obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Tuesday.

Freeman, 29, of Forest Hill was taken into custody on June 1 and he remained in the Tarrant County Jail on Tuesday.

Paige, 26, of Fort Worth, was arrested last week and he also has been charged with murder in the case.

The warrant written by Fort Worth Detective K.C. Sullivan gave this brief account of the shooting:

Freeman’s girlfriend was at a her aunt’s Fort Worth for a short time. Her aunt’s husband, 28-year-old Korey Ervin, also was there. Ervin played rough and Freeman’s girlfriend had a bruise on her arm.

Ervin and his wife drove the woman to her mother’s home, where a family member also noticed the bruise. A physical altercation almost erupted between the mother and Ervin’s wife.

Ervin and his wife left that home, but a short time later Ervin’s wife received a text from a family member who asked if she would be home.

A family member told Fort Worth police that Freeman was upset when he arrived at his girlfriend’s home and discovered the bruise on her, saying, “that (expletive) is going to die tonight,” according to the warrant.

Two vehicles pulled up at Ervin’s Fort Worth home. Freeman got out of one vehicle, while the driver later identified as Paige handed him a weapon.

Freeman asked Ervin to come over and talk, according to the warrant.

At some point, Ervin and Freeman got into a physical altercation, and Freeman shot and killed Ervin, the warrant stated.

Paige picked up the fired shell casing and retrieved the handgun from Freeman after the shooting.

Freeman walked up to Ervin’s wife and told her she was a witness, which frightened Ervin’s wife, Fort Worth police said in the warrant.

Freeman also told Ervin’s wife to say that he and Ervin had been “tussling” and the gun went off, according to the warrant.

Freeman then got back into the vehicle and drove off.
