Erratic driver was being pursued by deputy when vehicle struck woman, authorities say

A sheriff’s deputy was chasing an erratic driver Thursday night in Fort Worth when the pursued vehicle struck a pedestrian, authorities said.

The pedestrian, a woman whose name was not released, suffered serious injuries that are not life-threatening, authorities said. She was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, a MedStar spokesman said.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office deputy had been pursuing a Chevrolet whose driver was possibly intoxicated, a Fort Worth police spokesman said. The pursued vehicle struck the pedestrian about 6:45 p.m. at South Riverside Drive and U.S. 287.

The sheriff’s office ended the pursuit and the deputy rendered medical aid to the injured pedestrian, police said.

Fort Worth police found the vehicle abandoned south of the point where the woman was struck. Officers apprehended four of five suspects in the vehicle. The driver was among the assailants arrested, said Lt. Jennifer Gabbert, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Police later learned that the vehicle was stolen in Fort Worth.
