In a new account of boys’ shooting in Fort Worth, older youths were playing with guns

The account of how 1- and 8-year-old boys were shot Monday night inside a south Fort Worth hotel room has changed after authorities interviewed more of the youths who were present.

The first description of the shootings suggested that the infant got hold of a gun and had suffered an accidental, self-inflicted wound inside the Dalworth Inn in the 800 block of East Felix Street. The bullet fragmented and injured another boy in the lower part of his body, police said Monday night.

On Tuesday, police said that it had become clear in other interviews that the 1-year-old did not shoot himself. Also, the age of the second boy is 8 and not 4 as was previously reported in the original account.

Instead, two other children between 10 and 15 were playing with guns in the room when one of the handguns accidentally was fired, police said.

One of the older children did not stay at the motel after the shooting, and detectives want to speak with the youth.

Neither victim’s injuries are life-threatening, police said. The 1-year-old has been placed in the custody of the state Child Protective Services office.

Police asked anyone with other information on the case to email the Crimes Against Children Unit at fortworthpdcacu@fortworthtexas.gov.

Two men were shot at the motel on Nov. 27. Both survived.
