19-year-old killed in shooting at Grand Prairie apartments, police say

Grand Prairie police are investigating a shooting that killed a 19-year-old man early Thursday morning at the apartment complex where he lived.

The victim has been identified as Derrick Johnson. He died of a gunshot wound to the back, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Officers responded about 12:30 a.m. to the Forum at Grand Prairie apartment complex, 2650 S. Forum Drive. They found Johnson in the parking lot.

He was taken to Medical City Arlington trauma center, where he was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m.

Detectives “don’t believe this was a random encounter” and think the victim and suspect knew each other, the Grand Prairie Police Department said in a news release Thursday night.

No arrests had been made at the time of the release.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest of the killer.
