Man accused of robbing and killing a Fort Worth teen sentenced to 40 years in prison
A Dallas man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Tuesday for shooting a Fort Worth teen in broad daylight.
Lajerrian Montae Morgan, 27, was found guilty of murder Friday. Morgan was arrested in connection with the slaying of Chaz Gilley, an 18-year-old man who had just cashed a check at a bank inside a Walmart store, in October 2016.
Prosecutors argued that Morgan, and his co-defendant, Naficy Vondrake Baker, 26, followed Gilley outside of the Walmart and struck him with their vehicle while he rode his bicycle away from the southeast Fort Worth store.
Gilley tried to run away from his assailants but was shot multiple times in the legs and torso. Gilley was taken to a fire station by a passer-by, and an ambulance took him to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he died almost 24 hours later.
Baker was found guilty in July 2019 and sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.
After receiving credit for three years’ time served, Morgan could become eligible for parole after spending 17 years in prison, one of his attorneys, Wes Ball, said.
A third man, James Murphy, was arrested and indicted on a murder charge in the case, but the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office sought the charge’s dismissal when it became clear Murphy was not involved.
