Adult, child shot in North Crowley 9th grade campus parking lot, Fort Worth police say

Police continued Monday to investigate a shooting in the parking lot of North Crowley Ninth Grade Campus in which an adult and a child were shot Sunday night.

Police received a call at 7 p.m. Sunday that shots were fired at 4630 McPherson Blvd., Officer Ivan Gomez said.

One adult and one child had non-life-threatening injuries, Gomez said at a press conference Sunday night. The child, whose age was not specified, was in surgery at a local hospital Sunday. Both victims were in stable condition Monday, police said.

The north gymnasium at the school was being rented to an outside organization for a basketball game, which was ongoing at the time of the shooting, Crowley ISD spokesman Anthony Kirchner said.

The facility was being rented out to the youth sports organization, which is not affiliated with Crowley ISD. No Crowley students or staff were involved in the shooting, Kirchner said.

According to witnesses, a person was damaging a car in the parking lot when someone confronted them, WFAA-TV reported. When confronted, the person damaging the car reportedly started shooting.

Gomez said two guns of different calibers were shot at the same person, and there may be two different suspects. The shooting appeared to be targeted at a specific person, and the child was caught in the crossfire and randomly hit by a bullet, Gomez said.

The child was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle and the adult also was driven in a personal vehicle.

As of Monday, no suspects have been arrested, and police said the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. No suspect description was released.

Police were reviewing surveillance footage and talking to witnesses.

“It’s very alarming that it was at a school event,” Gomez said at the press conference. “It was at a district facility but not a district event. This time, we’re just glad that no lives were lost at this time.”

Fort Worth police said there was no armed security at the basketball game Sunday night. The Fort Worth Police Department provides armed security at school-sanctioned events within city limits.

Because of the shooting, Crowley ISD is planning to have armed security at future events when the facility is rented to an outside group, Gomez said.
