Man who opened fire at oncoming traffic on Christmas Day jailed in Fort Worth

A man who shot at cars on a freeway Christmas night was in jail in Fort Worth on felony charges.

Jorge Gonzales, 43, faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of deadly conduct, discharging a firearm, according to jail records. Total bonds for Gonzales were set at $330,000, jail records show.

Gonzalez is accused of firing at passing cars near the South Freeway service road and Sycamore School Road. Police say Gonzales also climbed to the rooftop of a residence before he was arrested.

Calls started coming into police about 10:30 p.m. from people saying a shirtless man wearing basketball shorts was on the shoulder of the freeway, shooting at passing vehicles and into the air, according to police.

The man was later seen running across the street near the Super 7 Inn in the 6600 block of the South Freeway. Police were told later that the man was on the roof of a house with a weapon and was threatening onlookers.

Police cars and a police helicopter had already set a perimeter around the house and then helped the people inside get out safely.

A few blocks away, a man told emergency medical personnel that he had been shot in the hand while he was driving north on the South Freeway service road. The man pulled over to have an ambulance meet him for treatment.

Investigators were trying to determine whether his injury was from a bullet or from glass shards. MedStar personnel treated the man for minor injuries, and he was not taken to a hospital.
