Driver accused in Garland hit-and-run arrested after video showed victim left to die
A driver accused in a Garland hit-and-run where a victim was left to die was arrested Thursday night in Richardson, Garland police said.
Twenty-nine-year-old Travis Gray was standing on a ladder in the roadway trying to a secure a vehicle onto a trailer when he was hit by a minivan on Wednesday afternoon. He was critically injured and remained in that condition on Friday.
Using video surveillance and tips, authorities identified the suspect and arrested him about 7 p.m. Thursday in the 13,400 block of TI Boulevard in Richardson. Garland police identified him as Miguel Angel Castro, 35, of Dallas.
The case began about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday when Garland police responded to a hit-and-run call in the 4300 block of Action St. in Garland.
Garland patrol officers found a man later identified as Gray lying in the street suffering from a head injury.
Garland traffic investigators recovered surveillance video in the area, which showed a dark blue minivan driving on Action Street. The video captured the minivan striking Gray, who was on the ladder. The driver stopped, got out of his vehicle, approached the victim, then returned to the minivan and drove off.
Garland police released the video in hopes that someone would recognize the vehicle or the driver.
On Thursday, investigators received a tip on a possible location of the minivan a 2006 Toyota Sienna. Authorities located the vehicle and confirmed that it had been involved in the crash.
Castro was in the Garland Jail on Friday, facing charges of failing to stop and render aid/serious bodily injury and possession of methamphetamine. He also was being held on a Dallas County warrant for bond forfeiture/possession of a controlled substance.
Bond had not been set for Castro.
