Barricaded man suspected of shooting DPS trooper arrested after 15-hour standoff
After a 15-hour standoff, police arrested the man they say shot a DPS trooper during a traffic stop in Frisco on Friday afternoon.
Bryan M. Cahill, 42, was taken into custody at about 5:05 a.m. Saturday at La Valencia at Starwood apartments in the 6800 block of Lebanon Road, the Department of Public Safety said in a press release.
Cahill is suspected of shooting a DPS trooper at the apartment complex at about 2:15 p.m. The trooper, whose name was not released, underwent surgery Friday at a Frisco area hospital, which doctors said went well, according to a DPS statement.
Throughout the standoff, Cahill fired multiple rounds at officers. When police took him into custody, Cahill was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, DPS said in the press release.
Once released, Cahill will be taken to Collin County Jail and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
Scott Bowers, who lives in the apartment complex, said Cahill is his neighbor. He said he did not speak with him often.
Bowers also said he saw Cahill get shot by officers. Police have not released further details about Cahill’s injuries.
When he first heard the shots, Bowers thought someone was setting off firecrackers. He said he looked outside and saw Cahill and realized the gunshots were real.
“I’m just sitting at my computer on my day off playing video games,” Bowers said. “I hear a bunch of pops, different sized pops. I go look out my front window. There’s a dude with some guns.”
Bowers said he called 911 and dispatchers told him officers were aware of the situation and would evacuate him as soon as it was safe to do so.
“I was laying on the floor for three hours shaking,” Bowers said.
He said eight or nine SWAT members came into his apartment and escorted him out at 6:20 p.m. He met his fiance, Kimberly Wohleb, outside the apartment complex and they hugged.
Many residents were evacuated from their homes and the entrance to the complex was blocked by police. Residents were allowed to return home Saturday, but several said they were still reeling from the experience.
On Saturday, black tape still stuck to most of the doors where the SWAT team had marked apartments.
“Everybody here was scared,” Cynthia Arzola said. She and her family have lived at the complex for four years, and she still has questions about the standoff and Cahill.
“I wanna know that they know who lives here,” she said about the apartment complex. “Why did he have all those weapons?”
Arzola said her oldest son was home alone when the shots started at 2:15 p.m. He grabbed the family’s dog and a knife and hid in the bathtub for three hours, she said.
“That three hours I didn’t have my son were the worst part. It’s an ugly feeling as a parent because you don’t know,” she said.
Arzola said she and another family stayed in the apartment’s model home for the night after they were evacuated from their apartment.
Don Burbee lives in the building next to the one in which Cahill barricaded himself. Burbee said at about 2:30 a.m., he heard 30 to 50 gunshots. Burbee said Cahill made a run for it and was arrested.
Burbee said his building was not evacuated.
Chimere Kimbrough also lives in the building next door and said she thought she heard an explosion at 2:15 p.m. When the noise continued, she realized they were gunshots.
“I have never seen anything like this before in my life,” she said.
The FBI and police from Frisco, McKinney, Richardson, Plano and Little Elm were involved in Cahill’s arrest.
The shooting occurred after the trooper tried to stop Cahill’s car for a traffic violation on Dallas North Tollway, according to DPS.
Instead of stopping, Cahill evaded the trooper and drove into the La Valencia at Starwood Apartments. There, he stopped the car and at some point shot the trooper, police said.
Police said crime scene technicians would be working throughout the day Saturday at the apartment complex and Texas Rangers were investigating.
Frisco is a suburb about 30 miles north of Dallas.
