Mustangs defender to play multiple roles
The Grapevine football team is going to be especially strong at linebacker this season thanks in part to the efforts of senior Brennon Davis.
The Grapevine linebacker wrapped up a strong 2015 season with 83 tackles and three sacks, and coach Randy Jackson said that he expects another good year from Davis.
“Brennon is a physical presence in our front seven, but he is also athletic,” Jackson said. “He is a former quarterback, and runs a 4.6 in the 40.”
A second-team all district selection at outside linebacker for the Mustangs in 2015, Davis spent most of the offseason hitting the weights to try to become even more of a force this coming season.
“Brennon is a workout-warrior type of kid,” Jackson said. “He lives in the weight room and added mass and strength.”
Davis said he was pleased with the season that Grapevine had in 2015 after flipping their win-loss total, going 8-3 last season compared to 3-9 in 2014, and said he is feeling good about his team’s chances heading into the season.
“We made a big improvement from the last year,” Davis said.
The Grapevine senior, who was also a member of the 2015 state champion lacrosse team, said he tries to “bring the energy” to his team, among other things.
Davis said he has worked on gaining weight (220 lbs.) this summer, as well getting stronger and faster during his offseason workouts.
For Grapevine to repeat upon the kind of success it had in 2015, Davis said it will take two things from him and his teammates.
“We are going to have to have high energy and great leadership,” Davis said.
Jackson said that Davis’ versatility will allow him to use his senior linebacker in more than just one role this year, which will be a big asset to the Mustangs defense and improve the teams’ chances of success.
“He will continue to be a tremendous outside linebacker, but he is fast enough that we will use him as a safety at times in certain coverages,” Jackson said.
Grapevine will open up the regular season at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 at Azle.
