Sydney Kaai is the type of player that coaches love — hard working, competitive and always looking for ways to improve.
The Colleyville Heritage junior was part of a playoff team last season that finished third in district play, and coach Allison Conaway said that Kaai is an important part of the team’s success.
“She brings stability,” Conaway said. “She’s also very competitive and has the potential to be a good leader.”
Kaai said that she was pleased with the season her team had and said she was especially happy to see the chemistry that developed by the end of year.
“I thought throughout the season we performed well,” Kaai said. “I’ve definitely seen growth within our team and in individual players. We did have some setbacks, but we did come together as a team and overcame them.”
Kaai said that she has some definite plans for her offseason to help prepare her for 2017.
“Over the summer, I plan on working on my pitching, looking for more spin on my balls and bigger explosions off the mound,” Kaai said. “I also want to work on fielding to make sure that my feet are just as fast as my hands. I also plan to work on my leadership skills because I will step up and become a leader for next season.”
Kaai said she believes that Colleyville Heritage can have another strong season this coming school year, in which her school drops to Class 5A, if the team can continue to work together and have everybody on the same page.
“It will take a lot of teamwork for us to have a strong season,” Kaai said. “Being able to trust and rely on one another is a big part. We will need to be able to know that positions can get their jobs done, and we will need great leadership.”
