She... is Me Conference aims to empower young women

White Chapel United Methodist Church will host the first annual SHE... is Me Conference from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 and organizers hope that the event will empower young girls.

“This is a great way to let girls know they are not alone and many girls have the same fears and worries,” organizer Nina Rios-Doria said. “A conference like this validates them, makes them feel heard and understood.”

Speakers include Michelle Aguilar with “I am Second.” Aguilar won Season 6 of the weight loss TV show “The Biggest Loser.”

Another speaker is Catherine Lowe who married Sean Lowe on the televison show, “The Bachelor.”

“I was wanting to find girls that were relatable,” Rios-Doria said. “Teenage girls think, ‘OK I know who she is’ and they really like them.”

There will also be worship sessions lead by Kaleidoscope and Julie Elias.

Rios-Doria said she hopes this conference empowers young women.

“In this society the message these girls are getting is they’re not worthy enough,” she said. “So they seek it in unhealthy ways, unhealthy dating relationships, acting out or sending or doing inappropriate things on the Internet.”

Those interested can register online by Feb. 4 at Registration is $30 per person and includes lunch and a T-shirt.
