Grapevine caps season of success

The 2015-2016 school year proved to be another good one for the athletics program at Grapevine High School, as many athletes and teams achieved great success.

The Grapevine golf program made another state appearance this spring, and coach Bryan Humphreys said he was pleased with how the season unfolded.

“I’m thrilled with our progress this past year,” Humphreys said. “It was a great season of hard work and commitment that led to another chance at a state title for both the boys and girls. At the beginning of the season, we needed to replace seven varsity players on the two varsity squads and we were quite successful in accomplishing that goal.

“More importantly, we remained playing at a high level with kids who were coachable, positive, caring and team oriented. Those attributes will serve us well going into next season. Beginning at August tryouts, it’s a new season and we will be back at square one pushing each other to create new memories for our newest team.”

Will Hocker won a district championship and finished second at region on the boys side for Grapevine, while Elly Baze birdied on the final hole at region to win an individual regional championship and lead the Grapevine girls to a regional championship as a team and their third consecutive trip to state.

The Grapevine football team won a district championship this year, and the volleyball team had a phenomenal season, winning a district championship and defeating Wichita Falls, Centennial, Boswell, and Hereford to reach the regional finals.

Both cross country teams qualified for state this season, and the Grapevine girls team brought home a state championship.

Hayden Murphy won a bronze medal on the boys side and led his team to a third-place finish at state.

The Grapevine boys basketball team finished second in district this season and qualified for the playoffs, while the Grapevine girls won a district championship and defeated Chisholm Trail and Centennial in the playoffs to reach the regional quarterfinals.

The Grapevine tennis team won a state championship in team tennis in the fall, defeating Austin Vandergriff by a score of 10-6, and David Hallaron finished second in the boys 200 IM with a time of 1:54.58 and third in the boys 100 Backstroke with a time of 51.77 at the state swim meet.

Teammate Parker Schultz was third in the boys 100 Butterfly with a time of 50.99, and Ben Kalmbach was fourth in the 500 free with a time of 4:41.08.

The Grapevine boys 200 Medley Relay team of Nicholas Tsigas, Hallaron, Schultz and Christian Hambrock finished sixth with a time of 1:39.28.

Shultz was also sixth in the 200 Free with a time of 50.91.

Wrestler Brian Andrews won a state championship in the heavyweight division this season, and the Grapevine boys soccer team won a district championship and defeated Azle, South Hills and Wichita Falls in he playoffs to reach the regional semifinals.

The Grapevine girls soccer team won a district championship and defeated Boswell, Centennial, Wichita Falls, Jefferson, Rider and College Station to reach the state championship match.

The Grapevine softball team finished second in district and qualified for the playoffs, and the baseball team won a district championship, and defeated Denton, Granbury and Wichita Falls Rider to reach the regional semifinals, which was played on May 27 after press time.

Miha and Tine Valenic reached the state championship match in spring tennis this season, and Peyton Weissmann won a state championship in the pole vault with a jump of 16-6.
