Denton man who died in flooding identified
A man found dead after being swept away by floodwaters in Denton on Saturday morning has been identified.
The victim was 53-year-old Manuel Abrego of Aubrey, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website.
About 5 a.m., someone flagged down an officer at Bell Place and East McKinney Street, near Quakertown Park just south of Texas Woman’s University, and told him that a man and a woman had been swept away by floodwaters in the nearby canal that runs through town, according to a police news release.
Abrego’s body was found just after 10 a.m. Saturday, almost five hours after the investigation began, by the Denton Fire Department swift water rescue team near South Loop 288 and Shady Oaks Drive.
Just before Abrego was found, a woman named Teresa Kelly was found by officers about half a mile down the canal near South Ruddell Street. She was taken to the Denton Regional Medical Center and there has been no update on her condition.
According to the National Weather Service, a quarter-inch of rain was recorded at Denton Municipal Airport between 4 and 5 a.m., just before the two were reported swept away.
Denton police are still investigating.
