Carroll baseball rolls on but faces tough Hebron squad
The Carroll baseball team got off to a good start this postseason and appears to be firing on all cylinders as it prepares for Hebron in the area round.
The Dragons defeated Mansfield in two straight games this past weekend, and coach Larry Hughes said that his team looked pretty good all the way around, but especially on the mound.
“We threw two shutouts, so obviously our pitching was good,” Hughes said. “We made a few errors in the first game, but we played really good defense in the second game. In the first game, our bats really came alive, and we knocked the ball around quite a bit. We were pretty much good all the way around in that 10-0 victory. Trevor Harris (a Baylor commit) pitched for us. Kole Ramage pitched for us in the second game, and just shut them down.
“He really kept them off balance, and there was never any real threat in the game. We didn’t really hit that much, but I think mentally our team knows throughout the year that we don’t really need a lot of runs when he’s pitching or (Matt) Canterino’s pitching.”
Carroll will be facing Hebron in the second round, a repeat of last year’s area round match up that the Dragons won in a series that went three games.
Hughes said that he expects another tough series from the Hawks this time around.
“When you go in the playoffs, your concern is for your next opponent,” Hughes said. “And Hebron is one of the best teams in the state. They bring back just about everybody from last year, and they were extremely tough this year. They won a real tough district, so that’s what we’re worried about.
“But we’ve been playing good baseball most of the year. We’ve been up and down on offense, but our pitching has been real consistent. We have an ERA from the season of 1.40, so we’re not giving up much. We’re averaging less than one run per game ... we are really playing good baseball right now.”
Time and location of the round against Hebron had not been determined at press time.
