Carroll baseball allows no runs over week’s games

The Carroll baseball team won its eighth consecutive game on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 shut out over Haltom and appears to be a formidable squad as the playoffs near.

Carroll was set to play L.D. Bell on Tuesday night after press time and will square off with the Blue Raiders again at 7 p.m. on April 29 at Bell High School. Predicted severe weather could play havoc with the schedule, however. See www.dfwvarsity.com for updates.

“They’re a little down from where they have been in the past, being a playoff team,” Hughes said of Bell. “But they still have good players over there and you have to play well to win, and we always play pretty close games when we’ve played in the past. I really think they’ll be pretty close games.

Carroll swept Haltom last week and Hughes said after Saturday’s game that his team played pretty well on both sides of the ball, and especially on the mound.

“We threw two shut outs this week,” Hughes said. “That was kind of the story of the week. We didn’t give up any runs. We also played good defense. We didn’t really swing the bat all that great in the first game winning 3-0, but did what we needed to. Today, we started out a little slow offensively, but picked it up toward the end of the game.”

With the eight-game win streak heading into Tuesday’s game against L.D. Bell, Hughes said that he believes his team is playing at the level it needs to be to be competitive in he playoffs.

“We’ve played real good baseball in district,” Hughes said. “Going down 0-2 to start district is not always real easy, but those two losses were against Coppell by one run. We’ve come back and played good baseball. We’ve pitched really well. Primarily, (Matt) Canterino and (Kole) Ramage have just done a great job in not giving up much at all.”
