Grapevine baseball enters week still undefeated in district

The Grapevine baseball team is in good shape as the season starts to draw to a close, and coach Steve Hutcherson said that he is pleased with the way his team is playing.

The Mustangs were 9-0 in district competition heading into Tuesday night’s game against Fort Worth Carter-Riverside and will play next at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Birdville.

“I’m not expecting a 10-0 game this time,” Hutcherson said. “They are a much better team than that, and they are as good as anybody we’ve played all year. We got after them when they were over at our place, but now we have to go there. We know they are going to give us their best effort and they’re a definitely a capable team.

Grapevine defeated the Hawks 10-0 in their first game on March 29 and were ranked 12th in the state heading into their Tuesday night game against Carter-Riverside.

Grapevine defeated Frisco Liberty on Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-0, and Hutcherson his team looked pretty sharp in all facets of the game.

“We played well,” Hutcherson said. “We threw Kyle Flamm, who has been our guy all year, and he had a good outing. He threw five innings and gave up two hits. We had Ty Jones, our short stop, who had three hits and two doubles. We just had a solid effort all the way around.

“We had great defense and good pitching, and we got enough hits to score some runs.”

Hutcherson said that a number of things give him confidence about his team heading toward the postseason and said that it really just a matter of staying focused and playing their game.

“I feel good,” Hutcherson said. “I think we have the qualities of a team that can have a successful run in the playoffs, because we have gotten good pitching. We throw strikes and we play good defense.

“Offensively, we’ve been really good. The playoffs are going to bring everybody’s best arms to the mound, so we are going to have to be playing as well as we have been all year when the playoffs roll around.”
