Carroll officials create staff positions to support campuses and facilities
Carroll school district officials recently approved five new positions in the facilities services department to better meet campus needs.
At the March 28 board meeting, trustees unanimously approved four new facilities support specialists and one irrigation specialist.
The new staff members will be hired using funds from currently vacant positions in the custodial, grounds and maintenance areas, so they will have no impact on the budget, administrators said.
“These positions are specifically designed to support campuses,” Director of Facilities Bob Carbajal said.
The facilities support specialists will perform a hybrid of maintenance, custodial and grounds duties. They will help set up for routine and special events, perform minor maintenance on the building, equipment and irrigation systems and other duties as needs arise.
Carbajal said they would be trained to conduct minor repairs to plumbing, drywall, ceiling tiles and trim and perform small scale painting tasks. They will change light bulbs, help set up the cafeteria for lunch, make sure buildings are secure and deliver needed supplies.
Each specialist will be assigned to a small group of campuses located near one another. Three of them will serve three schools each and one will have Carroll Senior High, the Aquatics Center, field house, arts center and Carroll Elementary.
The positions will develop leadership and teamwork as the specialists work with campus staff to address needs, administrators said.
The new irrigation specialist will oversee systems at all schools, facilities and athletic fields.
The reorganization using the vacant positions is “a great alignment opportunity” and a way to improve both efficiency and responsiveness, Carbajal said.
The positions were recently posted on the Carroll district website. The facilities support specialists have a starting salary of $14.41 an hour and could earn more depending on experience while the irrigation specialist starts at $18.01 an hour.
Carbajal said the support specialists would need some training but would likely be in place for the next school year.
