Talented youth sparking Trinity golf program
With all five varsity starters having graduated last season, one might think the Trinity Trojans were in for a long golf season.
But that just hasn’t been the case, said coach Barry Fuller. The youth in his program has sparked optimism.
The team has been led by junior Matthew Gomel, who has been Trinity’s lowest medalist for all four tournaments this past fall. He was second at the Timberview Classic at Diamond Oaks back in early November.
“We are a very young team in terms of the number of years our players have played the game,” Fuller said. “Many had not started until their eighth- or ninth-grade year, but they fell in love with the sport.
“Each of these players are learning the value of the game and have managed to hold their own in a game they can play the rest of their life.”
Meanwhile, on the girls team, four varsity players return, seniors Rainey Greaner and Cheyenne Spradling along with juniors Elli Merchant and Tuesday Henry.
Also, the brother and sister combo of junior Alex and sophomore Victoria Vu have been valuable contributors to the varsity squads, Fuller said.
Vu and Henry battled for the girls top spot all fall. Vu placed third at the Chisholm Trail Round-Up tournament in October at Hawks Creek.
“Our three new freshman boys, Matt Campbell (Harwood Junior High), Christian Campbell (Euless Junior High) and Sam Yeager (Harwood) will be competing this spring for one of the varsity spots and have shown great improvement over the first part of the school year,” Fuller said.
As for competing in District 7-6A, Fuller said, “We have a great district with some very solid teams that can compete with any other teams in the state.”
Southlake Carroll won the boys 6A state championship last season, while the Lady Dragons also qualified for state.
There’s only one way to prepare for such a district, Fuller said – play tough tournaments.
“Our schedule is tightly packed into a small window of time due to the winter months, spring break, state academic testing and the UIL district certification date of April 6,” he said.
“Once we get started, the spring season goes fast and we hope to not freeze or lose tournaments due to weather.
“I am very proud of our team. They respect the game, respect Trinity High School, succeed in the classroom and they honor their parents and coach."
