Colleyville addresses handgun law

Texas state law changed in 2016 to allow handgun license holders to carry a handgun concealed or openly in a proper holster.

According to the new law, which took effect Jan 1, a governmental body can prohibit license holders from carrying at an open meeting as long as proper notice is given.

At the Jan. 5 meeting, the City Council adopted a resolution to prohibit the open carrying of handguns into open meetings. The law also prohibits carrying handguns, concealed or openly, at a polling place or court.

GCISD conducts survey

Grapevine-Colleyville district officials recently conducted an online survey of parents and interested residents to collect feedback. More than 3,300 people participated.

Most respondents showed strong support and appreciation for GCISD teachers, a positive school environment, leadership initiatives and the integration of technology in the classroom. Areas of concern included student-teacher ratios, the impact of state assessments and the loss of local tax dollars under Chapter 41.

Grapevine names mayor pro tem

Grapevine Councilwoman Darlene Freed was named mayor pro tem at a Jan. 5 City Council meeting.

The former mayor pro tem, C. Shane Wilbanks, who was re-elected last year to a three-year term on the council, died Aug. 21 in his sleep at home.

Paul Slechta won a runoff race Dec. 8 to fill Wilbanks’s Place 1 unexpired term. Slechta was sworn in Jan. 5. Freed was elected to Place 4 in 1998. Her term expires this year.

MLK Holiday

All Carroll and Grapevine-Colleyville campuses will be closed Jan. 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
