Colleyville Elementary student to be mayor

When Sam Stacy found out during lunch that he was going to be Colleyville’s Mayor for a Day, he had few inspiring words for his fellow Colleyville Elementary classmates.

“Hi,” he said to a lunchroom of his peers. “That’s it.”

On Jan. 20, 10-year-old Stacy will take over the mayor’s seat during the City Council meeting and tour various city facilities. Stacy was informed of his victory at school on Dec. 17 by the Colleyville Mayor David Kelly, city officials and his family.

A committee chose Stacy based on his essay about how he would make Colleyville a better city, which included the idea of creating a giving tree where people could buy presents for those less fortunate.

This is the second Stacy to assume office, his older brother, Jack, won last year. Sam Stacy also beat out his younger sister this year.

“I’m very much proud,” Stacy’s mother, Lori Stacy, said. “We encourage them to get involved with the community.”

Lori said Sam had plenty of ideas for his essay.

“He was ready to run this city for the next few years with his ideas,” she said.

Kelly said the contest has been successful for 10 years.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for students to learn about civic service,” he said. “It may fuel the want to give back to the community.”

Sam Stacy said he was inspired to apply after seeing his brother’s success.

“My brother wanted to do it and he got to miss school and do stuff,” Sam Stacy said.

He added that he is looking forward to seeing the city from atop a fire truck cherry picker.
