The Carroll boys basketball team could be stronger than it has been in years in 2014-2015, and one of the staples of that team is guard Kirk Mason.
The CHS senior is a three-year starter for the Dragons and has proven himself invaluable to the team, and coach Eric McDade said that Mason is the sort of player that every coach wants on his team.
“Kirk's a guy that is a three-year letterman who is playing super confident right now,” McDade said. “Just the leadership and intangibles that he brings, you can't say enough about it. He comes to work every single day and his attitude is infectious.”
Mason said he tries to energize his team and keep them upbeat.
“As a three year letterman, playing time doesn't really matter to me, because it is going to be there,” Mason said. “I just try to bring an energy and positive attitude to everybody. Because no matter what our attitude is that day, I try to bring people up.”
Mason said he believes Carroll is off to a strong start and said he is optimistic about the Dragons' chances.
“I'm really proud of everyone,” Mason said. “We've had a lot of injuries this pre-season. We've had a lot of kids get sick, and somehow, everyone is still stepping up, playing their role and just getting the job done, and it is absolutely awesome.”
Mason said he has some definite goals for this season, both personally and as a team.
“Personally, I just want to keep improving every day and hopefully play in college,” Mason said. “As a team, I want us to win a district championship and go deep into the playoffs, because I think we can do it.”
In order to make the post-season and have a good run, Mason said it will take a couple of things.
“We have to take everything one day at a time,” Mason said. “Instead of thinking too far into the future, we have to worry about the next practice and the next game. We have to keep that mentality.”
McDade said that Mason's contributions to the team cannot be underestimated on or off the court.
“He's a guy that is explosive and is just experiencing such a great year offensively,” McDade said. “Field-goal wise, he is 51 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line ... so he's putting up some very attractive numbers from an offensive standpoint. But on an off the floor, he is just a joy to be around. He is great for our program.”
