Massive rally can’t complete comeback for Carroll

The Carroll varsity hockey team scored three of the last five goals on Thursday night’s game against the Arlington/Midlothian varsity squad, but could not complete the comeback as the Dragons lost 5-3 at the Euless Star Center Green Arena.

Arlington/Midlothian scored the first three goals of the game and led 3-0 heading into the second period, before Blake Taylor broke through for the Dragons.

Taylor scored a shorthanded goal on an assist from Jeffrey Rucci to make it 3-1 in favor of Arlington/Midlothian.

Carroll brought the game to within one when Zach Marso scored on assists from Tyler Culp and James Gibson six minutes later.

Arlington/Midlothian added another goal to make it 4-2, but just before the end of the second period, Rucci scored his second goal of the night to make it 4-3.

Carroll could not find a way to score in the third period and ended up losing by two.

Carroll heads into the holiday break with a record of 3-7 and will take on the Mansfield varsity in its next game at 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 4 at the Farmers Branch StarCenter Miller Arena.

The Dragons are currently in ninth place in the varsity division of the AT&T Metroplex high school hockey league.

Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage loses close one

The Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage varsity hockey team pulled its game against McKinney to within one goal twice on Thursday night, but ended up losing 4-3 at the McKinney StarCenter South Arena.

McKinney jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period before Garrett Culps broke through for the varsity team on an unassisted goal to cut the deficit in half.

Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage tied it up just over a minute later on an Andrew Bibby goal with an assist from Austin Hills.

McKinney scored a second and third period goal before Bibby added a second goal to make it 4-3 McKinney late in the third, but Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage could not come all the way back.

Christopher Malone and Alec Monhollen both earned assists on the Bibby goal.

Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage is ranked seventh among the varsity teams.

Christopher Rodo has led the team in scoring throughout the first part of the season with a total of 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists).

Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage will open the second part of the season at 8 p.m. on Jan. 8 against Arlington/Midlothian at the Euless StarCenter Green Arena.
