The Miracle League of Southlake is making a big impact on kids with special needs around Southlake in its first season, chairman of the board Phillip Meyer said.

“It’s just been pure pleasure,” Meyer said.

The Miracle League of Southlake caters to kids with disabilities, giving them the chance to play America’s pastime. It began its first season last month on the new Texas Rangers Miracle Field in Bicentennial Park, and it is “going about as well as you can imagine.”

“It’s been tremendous for the players and their families, to be able to see their child participate, has been overwhelming,” Meyer said. “I can’t tell you the number of people who have come up and thanked us for doing this.”

In Miracle League play, each player has a buddy to help them out and cheer them on. The games only have two innings, and each player gets to bat in each inning.

And there’s smiles all around.

“Everyone’s having fun: the players, the parents, the buddies, the announcers,” Meyer said. “It’s the funnest hour you’ll have.”

The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation donated $100,000 to the construction of the field, and the city of Southlake donated the land as well as backstopping remaining field building costs. The last games of the six-week season are scheduled to be played on Halloween.
